Supporting Young Musicians with Nicola Cantan

On this week’s episode of the Time to Practice podcast we’re speaking with Nicola Cantan: someone who really inspires me as a teacher: music eductor, pianist, podcaster, author and more from Ireland.

I’ve read some of Nicola’s books, one of which we talk about in this episode. I love following her on social media for relatable, engaging and refreshing ideas and she has many, many resources that you can engage with, including her own podcast if you want to hear more from her after listening to this episode.

Highlights of this Conversation include:

We discuss what I love about Nicola’s Instagram account, which is that she shares such a real life look into modern-day music teaching. I find that very refreshing! Nicola Cantan emphasized the importance of being transparent about the real-life challenges of music teaching, rather than presenting an idealized version, especially for those just starting out as teachers to see.

We talk about Nicola’s book Practice Pie: The step-by-step guide to helping your child enjoy their music practice which I recently ready, loved, and which prompted me to reach out to her for this interview. We discuss where the idea came from for this great book for families of music students and some of the ideas in it. I can’t recommend it enough!

The best rule I know from habit formation research is never miss twice. That's one of my favorites. So don't beat yourself up . . . It does not have to be perfect at all. It just needs to be consistent over time. Keep chipping away at it, and it really does make a difference.” Nicola Cantan, Time to Practice Podcast, Episode 80

Nicola also shared some great insights and ideas about practice including how isolating it can feel for students sometimes, the importance of parent or caregiver involvement, and left us with a great practical tip about music practice.
