Getting Back to Our Fall Practice Routine with Barbie Wong

This week on the Time to Practice podcast, guest Barbie Wong joins me to discuss six things that can help us get back in our fall practice routine and set us up for a productive school year. Even if you’re listening to this episode and it’s not the start of the school year where you are, we think these reminders will help you with your practice routine whenever you try them. You can listen to, or read about, the first interview I did with Barbie Wong HERE.

Our Six tips for getting back to your practice routine (be sure to listen, or read the transcript below, for more details):

  1. Check in with your teacher and make a plan to get any materials, or take care of any instrument maintenance that you may need to be set up for a successful school year.
  2. Take an inventory of all the activities your child is involved in so you have a realistic picture of how much time you have to commit to their practice this school year.
  3. In addition to having a set lesson time each week, be sure to schedule in daily practice as a planned activity so you know you have the time built into your schedule.
  4. Make music practice a habit!
  5. Come up with an emergency practice plan for tough days and put it somewhere in your practice notebook or device to refer to.
  6. Find a balance in your practice between simply playing for the enjoyment of it and the more disciplined hard work that we also want to get done. Barbie has some great ideas about how to do this in our conversation.
