Gift Ideas for Music Students

Now that Thanksgiving has passed in the US, our house has started preparing for the holidays. Decorations are going up and we’re all crossing our fingers the cats don’t take them back down again!
If you are a parent of a music student, you might be thinking ahead to gifts for your children, like I am.
It’s always fun to get music related gifts for the young musician’s in our lives, but sometimes hard to come up with ideas.
Here is a list of 10 gift ideas for your music student:
Nail Clippers:
It always seems like musician’s nails are too long and we don’t notice until it’s time to play! Having a cute pair that is kept in the practice space is a great idea and you can even find music themed ones like this one.
Magic Rosin
If your child plays a string instrument this is a really fun gift. Magic rosin has all sorts of designs including animals, sparkles, and musical art. You can check out the designs here: https://www.connollymusic.com/magic-rosin
Music Themed Notebooks
Everyone can use a good notebook with a unique design! Check out this one based off of a graphic from the blog Practice Rules Spiral Notebook
Pencil Pouch
For all the little accessories a musician needs, or just for keeping everyday homework supplies a pencil pouch always comes in handy!
Here are a couple very cute pencil pouch options with music themes: On Amazon and Etsy.
Handmade Jewelry
You can find all sorts of jewelry items that are music themed on Etsy. Here is one I loved: Handmade Treble Clef Necklace.
Personalized music bag
This etsy shop has all sorts of designs. I know my own music students often come in carrying their practice binder and many books. A bag to carry them all in is a great idea and it’s even more fun when it’s music themed!
A Metronome
More experienced students can always use a good metronome. You can use a simple electronic one: https://amzn.to/2PX4z0I or a fancy one like I use in my studio https://amzn.to/2FTQ1L5.
Practice mute for string players
A practice mute (like this one for violin) is what many musicians use when practicing in hotel rooms, or while their family is sleeping. I find teens who want to practice late at night really find them valuable. This is not the same thing one would use to play in an orchestra with but it’s a great practice tool.
Music Stand
Sometimes I learn that students are balancing music creatively at home on all sorts of surfaces to practice. Other students are using folding travel stands which can be problematic for holding heavy books or more than one book at a time. If you have not yet invested in a music stand for your child (and if they are not a pianist) this is a great gift. You can find basic, black stands or there are even stands in fun colors.
Music Writing Notebook
Give your child the space to write their own music. Amazon has a number of versions of what it calls songwriting books which are just full of blank lines of the staff with cute covers. You can find one version HERE.
Bonus idea: Practice counters
My preschool students love counting items as they practice, and we also balance these little guys on the violin too, which is fun for any age. There are so many fun ways to use them in practice! These animal erasers are some of my favorites.
